The Otterize network mapper is a zero-config, lightweight tool designed to provide insights into Kubernetes cluster traffic without requiring extensive modifications like new CNIs or service meshes. It maps pod-to-pod traffic, pod-to-Internet traffic, and even AWS IAM traffic. Users can leverage the Otterize CLI to list traffic by client, visualize the network, export results in JSON or YAML formats, or reset remembered traffic. The tool continuously builds a communication map, which can be exported as ClientIntents Kubernetes resource files for use with the Otterize intents operator to configure network policies and Kafka ACLs.

What types of traffic can the network mapper detect?

The network mapper can detect pod-to-pod traffic, pod-to-Internet traffic, and AWS IAM traffic within your Kubernetes cluster. It uses various components like sniffers and watchers to capture DNS, TCP connections, Kafka logs, and Istio sidecar metrics.

How does the network mapper resolve service names?

Service names are resolved either by an 'otterize/service-name' label if present, or by recursively looking up the Kubernetes resource owner for a pod until the root (e.g., Deployment) is reached. This ensures mapping uses familiar development team terminology.

Can the network map be used to automate network policies?

Yes, the network map can be exported as ClientIntents Kubernetes resource files. These files can then be consumed by the Otterize intents operator to automatically configure pod-to-pod access with network policies, or Kafka client access with Kafka ACLs and mTLS.

Does the network mapper collect any personal or organizational data?

The mapper reports anonymous usage information to the Otterize team to help understand software usage patterns. No personal or organizational identifying information is transmitted. Users can opt out of telemetry at any time via a configuration flag.
